School Nursing

The School Nursing Team supports children and young people in making healthy choices to attain good physical, sexual and mental health

Like Health Visiting, School Nursing is a universal service. However, this service focuses on families of school age children. School Nurses offer a wide range of services such as drop-ins in primary schools for parents and/or children and for young people in high schools where they can access advice and support.  They work within schools, the local community and within homes to support children and young people (with others) to achieve their full educational and health potential. This includes children with complex needs and training teachers to help them. They also deliver health promotion sessions in schools and other settings on issues such as hygiene, safety, growing up and sexual health.

Children's health is monitored with a health assessment at school entry, growth at Year 6 and any additional assessment needed along the way.

Other services offered are:-

  • Parenting
  • Mental Health
  • Immunisation
  • Healthy eating and lifestyle
  • Quit smoking
  • Sexual health

School Nurses are available all year round. To contact your School Nurse you can ring your child's school, your local health centre or look in your Parent Held Record (Red Book).
